Four Foods on Friday meme #60
It’s time for Four Foods on Friday! I’m posting this a day early so you can play along on your blog. Swing by Val’s place and participate!
#1. What’s your favorite crunchy food?
Hmm. I suppose crunchy peanut butter, cereal or maybe nachos or something. When I really think about it, I don’t eat a whole lot of crunchy foods. Curious.
#2. How often do you try new recipes?
Once I get in a rut (like I am now) I will search out new recipes or if I get inspired by something like Top Chef or a cooking show I will take a basic idea they had and add my own twist to it. I rarely follow recipes to a tee unless its baking where there’s really no room for error.
#3. Name a food that you almost always have in the house.
I always have the boring staples like milk, eggs and bread. But something I always have regardless is Spam. Yep, Spiced Ham in a can. Most people retch at the thought of Spam but in Hawaii they’re responsible for a big majority of the Spam eaten and with the economy the way it is, Spam is making a comeback on the mainland too. When there’s a tornado warning it’s the first thing I grab along with bottled water before heading down to the basement. Then I know we’ll be covered foodwise if we’re trapped in the basement and it’ll help us retain water too. LOL (I always get light though to help in that department a bit)
#4. What kind of food do you leave out for Santa on Christmas Eve?
A Christmas cookie of some kind…usually gingerbread. Mmm….

I’m a vegetarian now, but even before I was I never had Spam. I don’t know why… it just never struck me as something that would be good, yet I’ve seen some interesting things done with it on the Food Network and other cooking programs. It seems to have quite a cult following.
I’ve heard about Spam being very popular in Hawaii, so I’m not surprised it’s a staple for you. But do you really like it? It was given to me way too often as a kid since it was cheap and my mom was a single mother, so I can’t even stand to look at it now.
Gingerbread is so yummy! I wish I had some warm out of the oven right now.
Is there a reason why Spam is so big in Hawaii? I’ve heard that fact before, but never knew why.
I am so glad my husband watches the Food Network. He is always trying out new things. That means he is cooking!
Spam was big in WWII because it needed no refrigeration and was perfect for the military. Hawaii integrated it into their local food and prepare it in such great ways that you’d never know it was spam half the time. There is actually a secret ration of Spam in the side of a mountain so if the barges stopped running due to a disaster or something, there will be enough Spam to go around for awhile. In Hawaii you can go through McDonalds and get my favorite…Spam, Eggs and Rice!
