Thought I’d do something a little different. I have a few favorite restaurants on Kauai like Puka Dog in Poipu, Duke’s Canoe Club in Lihue and Brick Oven Pizza in Kalaheo. It got me wondering what other people’s favorite Garden Island restaurants were.

Waiupa’a-(why-ooh-pa ah)- Cheese
The alphabet contains 12 letters: 5 vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and 7 consonants (h, k, l, m, n, p, w). To simplify pronunciation, sound consonants as in English and break up words so they are easy to say (ie- Humuhumunukunukuapua’a would be pronounced humu-humu-nuku-nuku-apu-a-a)
Pronounce vowels as follows:
a - a in above; e - e in set; i - ee in see; o - o in some; u - oo in moon.
Pronounce vowels marked by a glottal stop (`) quickly ie- o`o sounds like oh-oh! in English.
Stress rising dipthongs (ae, ai, ao, au, oi, ou, eu, ei) on the first letter and end with a short e, i, o or u. ie- oi sounds like oy in soy, ending with a short “i”.
Aloha Friday Recipe: Hawaiian Kine Tripe Stew

Ingredients
1-2 pkgs. Honeycomb Tripe
2 large yellow onions, cubed
6-8 c. water
1 6oz. can tomato paste
4 jumbo potatoes; peeled & cubed into lg. pieces 3 large carrots, cut into 1″ pieces
3 stalks of celery, cut into 1″ pcs.
1 TBSP Hawaiian salt
1 tsp black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Remove most (but, not all) of the fat from tripe. Then cut it into 1×2″ pieces (larger, if preferred). Place tripe, water and onions in a large pot, and bring to a boil. Lower heat to medium, and add tomato paste. Stir, cover pot and let simmer for 1-1 1/2 hrs. or til tripe is almost tender (chewable). Add potatoes, carrots and celery to pot. Cover & simmer for another 15-20 minutes.. or til potatoes are soft. Mash a few potatoes to thicken gravy til desired thickness. Add salt and pepper, & simmer 5 minutes more. Remove pot from heat & let it sit 10-15 minutes before serving.

Roy’s is taking part in Share Our Strength’s Great American Dine Out September 20-26, 2009. To help support this great cause and raise awareness, all Roy’s locations will be donating proceeds generated from sales of the Classic Melting Hot Chocolate Soufflé during the week of September 20.
Share Our Strength is a national organization that raises money to aid community programs across the country to help children at risk of hunger. In addition to Great American Dine Out, the foundation uses a variety of programs to help raise funds to support their initiatives.

Mmm…Paparoni’s!

You know, we have been looking for what we consider the “perfect pizza” in the islands for 13 years. I am thankful to say, we finally found it! Paparoni’s is located in Captain Cook on the Big Island of Hawaii. (About 15 minutes south of Kona) It’s tucked in a small side of the road building with a few shops including the place next door which sells Auntie Helen’s Banana Bread. Yum! Paparoni’s pizza is heavenly. The right amount of sauce to cheese to pepperoni ratio which is surprisingly hard to come by these days. The sauce is garlicy without being overpowering and a good blend of herbs. The pepperoni is tasty as is the cheese. All of these things come together to make one heck of a pizza pie! So good we may get it more than once in a week and tell all visitors to make a trip there. Not only is the pizza good but the service is great too. We’ve always been greeted by smiling faces and sassy, attentive service.
We also tried their subs as well and they were pretty good. (We got them cold for a plane ride but I think if they were heated they’d be better. But they’re perfect to pick up on your way to the Volcano or down to Kealakekua Bay.)

Aloha Friday Recipe: Banana Lumpia

24 lumpia wrappers
8-10 medium bananas
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg white
Beat egg white. Mash bananas, brown sugar, and vanilla. Place small amount of mixture just below the center of the lumpia wrapper. This should be with the corners facing up and down. fold corner nearest to you over the filling, tucking the corner under the filling. Fold side corners over top, like an envelope. Moisten the point with a little of the beaten egg whites and press firmly to seal. Deep fry at 400° for 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with whipped cream, chocolate, mango, and raspberry sauces for dipping. Sprinkle with brown sugar.

4 slot toaster that only does one side of the bread well and then you have to flip it. It’s not even that old. Poorly made piece o’ crap!
Do you use a tablecloth? When - always, when eating, etc.
I have some but I usually only use one for Christmas.
Do you use paper or cloth napkins?
Paper towels or Vanity napkins if we have company.
