Earthquake recorded at Kilauea Volcano

Filed Under Current Events, Kilauea Volcano | Leave a Comment

A 3.7 magnitude earthquake hit Kilauea Volcano this morning at about 3amHST followed by about a dozen smaller ones.  It’s reported it didn’t really effect the sulfur vent at Halema’uma’u but it was observed that the glow seemed to disappear afterward.  They are considering possible evacuation of the town of Volcano depending on Pele’s whims.  Stay tuned, we’ll be watching this closely!

Update:  Another section of Crater Rim Drive has been closed due to volcanic rocks found in the road and Halema’uma’u lookout/parking lot that they are attributing to the quake which caused the first eruption from that site since 1924.  The road has been closed for safety reasons while the scientists try to figure out what the presence of those rocks mean.

Karma and the police out for Chapman’s son

Filed Under Current Events | 1 Comment

Tucker Chapman, son of Duane “Dog” Chapman, who is now known for selling a secret recording of his father using racial slurs to the highest bidder is in the pokey for allegedly violating parole.  The alleged violations include drug use, association with a felon, failing to inform the parole officer that he had contact with a police officer and failure to follow the police officer’s instructions.  He was moved Halawa Correctional Facility and a hearing will be scheduled within 2 months.  Dog has been quoted as saying he is “heartbroken” over his son’s arrest.  Many people are commenting this is karma for turning on his own family.  I hope the $15,000 was worth it.

Dog Chapman back on the hunt

Filed Under Current Events | Leave a Comment

A&E announced Tuesday that they will resume production of their #1 reality show Dog the Bounty Hunter.  The show was pulled from A&E’s schedule indefinitely on October 31st after Chapman’s son Tucker taped a phone conversation 8 months prior in which the bounty hunter used racial slurs in reference to his son’s girlfriend.  For as many people that were outraged by this there seemed to be as many supporters who pleaded with A&E to bring the show back.  Many message boards of Dog supporters have said that while it was wrong that he used that term and it was ignorant, the good Dog does for the state by capturing fugitives and making the streets safer played a major role in their support of bringing the show back.  No return date has been announced as of yet.

Controversy has swirled around the cast such as hinting the marriage of Dog and Beth was more than strained at the height of his “apology media tour.”  In January, Tim “Youngblood” Chapman was arrested for indecent exposure and terroristic threatening when he was approached by a security guard who was following up on a report that there was a man fondling himself in the Ala Moana Shopping Center parking garage.  When the guard approached Chapman, who claimed he was changing his pants after having spilled juice on them, fled the parking garage in his vehicle.  The security guard alleges he was trying to hit him.   He is currently out on bail and separated from the mother of his two girls, Davina.

Blockbuster opening a distribution center in Honolulu

Filed Under Current Events | 2 Comments

The Honolulu Advertiser reports that Blockbuster is moving in on Netflix territory by opening a distribution center in Honolulu to attempt to give residents one day service when ordering movies by mail.  In the article, they speak with a Netflix employee who stuffs these envelopes for customers at a rate of 3.6 seconds per envelope and most of the time isn’t even looking down at the envelope while doing so.  This explains alot.

We are newer Netflix members since November since we were spending equal to or over their 3 movie per month price of $16.99 on new releases every Tuesday.  This seemed ideal to us.  2 months into membership I can tell you we’re considering switching to Blockbuster.  We received a new release the day it came out ONE time and that was during our free two week trial membership.  More times than not we have to wait for 2-4 weeks before we get a new release.  Twice we’ve just gone out and rented new releases that are put on “long wait” which is a minimum of 2 weeks.  Lord forbid you’re on a “very long wait” which can be 4 weeks!!  If new releases aren’t a big deal to you then consider this part of our experience.  If we had to average, 1 in 5 discs we receive are either completely unplayable or skip around so much we have to try other players or our DVD drive in our computer to play it.  We’ve received discs that have massive scratches, gaping cracks and even received someone’s audio cd they returned by mistake!!  If they’re more concerned with pumping out 4 second turnaround times than doing quality control to make sure what they’re even sending you is even a movie then there’s a problem.  We called customer service about it and they were nice enough to send us something out while we returned the CD.  Assuming they’d put a note on the account we sent the CD back only to 4 days later receive an email saying we returned a cd instead of a movie (we didn’t, we put it in with another movie return as customer service instructed) and they’d be nice enough to send it back to us.  2 days later we had it back and customer service told us just to throw it away to avoid more confusion.

The upside with Blockbuster seems to be, at least here, that if you have movies to be sent back out to be returned and there’s a new release you want, you can go in store and exchange one of your returns for a new release.  Sure you have to go into the store to do that but given that we’re having to wait 2-4 weeks through Netflix, if not longer, and we’re new release junkies then Blockbuster is looking more and more appealing.

So good luck islanders, I hope your new choice of vendors allows you to not be pigeon holed into a company where they seem more concerned with quantity than quality.

Throw the book at ‘em…

As a pet lover, I cannot even bear to write about this story though I’ve followed it closely.  All I can say is I pray the maximum penalty is thrown at these horrible men and for anyone who would dare say they need to eat, there are shelters and food pantries for that.

McMackin new UH head coach

Filed Under Current Events, Hawaii Sports | 1 Comment

The next best thing?  We’ll see!  Former defensive coordinator for Hawaii Greg McMackin has accepted the Hawaii head coach position for an annual salary of $1.1 million per year.  McMackin received many public endorsements for the position including the exiting Jones.  I’m excited by this announcement because it feels like they’re keeping it all in the family and McMackin shares and helped shape the same philosophy that led our Warriors to victory.  Looking forward to seeing the 2008 season!

Aloha Coach Jones!

After doing what some considered the impossible by turning a football program from 0-12 at his start in 1999 to 12-0 at the culmination of his UH tenure, Coach June Jones has decided it’s time to move on.  He will be the new head coach at Southern Methodist University signing a 5 year deal which will garner him a $2 million salary per year.  Jones was torn as news spread of his possible departure, he was overwhelmed with phone calls and emails from Warrior fans begging him to stay.  Jones says it was never about the money but that University of Hawaii was not willing up front to put in writing their planned improvements to the football program like it’s athletics facilities and other resources.  When it did come, it seemed to be too little, too late.   (These improvements should NOT be part of a coaches contract negotiations!  They should be something that is done because there is now a national spotlight on Hawaii.  People always talked about respecting the Hawaii football team…I agree.  The problem is, why doesn’t their own university they play for respect them enough to give them decent workout facilities, dorms and other resources?  Don’t play the money card.  You think with the attention and respect Hawaii’s gained as a team this year that people wouldn’t be lining up at fundraisers to help these guys get even the most basic of conveniences?  It’s embarassing.  Hell, I’d donate time and sweat equity to get this team what they need to at least be proud to show new recruits!  I’m sure I’m not the only one!  But I digress…)

We will miss Coach Jones and all that he has brought to the UH program.  He’s taught those boys to become men and lead them spiritually so they respect opportunities they have and to play with heart.  I only hope the next coach does the same because they’ve got some BIG shoes to fill!

ATTENTION UH FOOTBALL FANS!
