The Superferry files for bankruptcy
Filed Under Current Events | Leave a Comment
When we heard things were being auctioned off from the Superferry, we knew bankruptcy wouldn’t be far behind. People certainly had strong opinions for or against it and if the proper studies had been done prior to just launching it perhaps things wouldn’t have ended this way. Hana Highway temporarily closed
Filed Under Current Events, FYI | Leave a Comment
There’s been another mudslide on the Hana Highway near mile marker 21 by Puakaa Park. There’s currently no ETA as to when it will be re-opened but if it’s like the last one, it was opened later the same day. This is the 2nd landslide in the same area over the past month.
For those who plan to use the Hana Highway in the upcoming months, PLEASE exercise caution between mile markers 20-23 where this land now seems to be a little more unstable. Be very aware of your surroundings and no lollygagging. This is not to say speed above the 15 mph speed limit either but there’s plenty of other scenery to see on the highway. If you should see a mudslide while on the highway and by some miracle are able to get decent cell coverage, call the Maui County Police Department at 808-244-6340.

This is why I love Kauai
Filed Under Current Events, Hawaii Activities | Leave a Comment
Kauai has long been our favorite island since we went on our honeymoon in the mid-nineties. When people ask why, it would be easy to cop out and say it’s beauty, the movies filmed there or a list of other tangible things. But it’s the recent donation of time and equipment to bring back access to a popular state park that captures what we really love about Kauai in what is one of the most tangible displays of aloha spirit that I’ve seen in some time.
Polihale State Park has been closed since December due to a bridge that washed out in heavy rains and the DLNR has said they had no money to fix it. So people stepped up and did what the state couldn’t. The closure has been hurting the local economy and the locals had enough just sitting back and waiting for something to be done. This amazing act of aloha should show state legislature that the community depends on these parks not just for the economy but for the purpose they were created…recreation. This is why the Recreation Renaissance bill needs to pass which would grant $240 million toward the improvements of Hawaii’s parks. Mahalo to all of the volunteers who are helping with this project!

Bounty Hunter Tim Chapman acquitted
Filed Under Current Events | 134 Comments
The ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter’ sidekick was found not guilty of indecent exposure yesterday. The judge said that there was no proof that Chapman intentionally exposed himself. The prosecutor said by him fleeing the scene it made him look guilty but Chapman claimed it was incurring the wrath of Beth Chapman that caused him to flee. She’d just warned everyone two days prior about not bringing any more negative publicity. (This was at the height of Dog’s own negative publicity for racist remarks he made during a private conversation to his son.) Tim Chapman (no relation to Dog) said he fought the charge because a conviction would’ve made it harder to fight for custody of his kids. He was served with divorce papers by his wife Davina the day his trial began.

Bounty hunter Tim Chapman in court

Yesterday was not the best of day’s for former Dog the Bounty Hunter regular, Tim Chapman. He began his trial for indecent exposure and terroristic threatening and was also served divorce papers by his wife Davina. Chapman was allegedly observed by a woman…err…”pleasuring himself” last year in a parking garage and when approached by a security guard he pulled up his pants in the backseat and then drove out of there allegedly almost hitting the guard. Chapman’s lawyer maintains Tim was simply changing his clothes when he spilled orange juice on himself.

Breaking News: A hui hou Uncle Boy Kana’e
Filed Under Current Events, FYI | 4 Comments
It is with great sadness that True Aloha says a hui hou to Maui’s own “Hawaiian Suppa Man” Uncle Boy Kana’e who passed away. Those who have listened to KPOA whether on Maui or online always knew when Boy was on the air because you’d hear Bruddah Iz’s “Maui, Hawaiian Suppa Man” start up and in the middle Uncle would give his trademark jovial laugh. There was nothing more soothing than listening to him speak, he had a comforting tone and made pidgin sound like a melodic song. I will miss him beyond words because although I never met him personally, I, as many of his listeners I’m sure will agree, felt like his was my uncle. We know he’s in a good place and it’s evident by his faith. The following is his bio from the KPOA website:
Aloha, My name is Henry KML Kana’e a.k.a. Uncle Boy the Maui Hawaiian Supaman of KPOA 93.5. Born and raised on the island of Maui in a family of six brothers. I am also the cultural advisor for Maui Fest Hawaii in which we create film festivals throughout the county of Maui and an Associate Pastor with Harvest Chapel, Church of God. I joined KPOA in 1994 when we were known as the Lahaina Broadcasting Company based in Lahaina. There I learned about the music of Hawaii and how to share the Aloha to our listeners. Eventually, our ohana grew and we relocated to the central part of Maui and became known as The Pacific Radio Group. In my 12 years with Pacific Radio Group, I have found that being a DJ has a great responsibility to the community in that we are their connection to the world and what we say and do makes a difference to those listening to us. My experiences here at KPOA has created some my most memorable moments which includes working with the Morning Goddess and mentoring many of our younger DJ’s and participating on many occasions in our community events. So keep listening to KPOA 93.5 and on the world wide Internet on KPOA.COM and remember, “If nothing ever goes right, take it to the left, left is where your heart is, and your heart is love, and Love is God and God will set your free.” Aloha
Aloha and A Hui Hou Uncle Boy. I will never be able to hear Bruddah Iz’s Maui Hawaiian Suppa Man without thinking of you and still hearing your hearty laugh in the middle. You touched so many and you will never be forgotten.
Congrats to president elect Barack Obama

True Aloha would like to extend it’s congratulations to Hawaii born president elect Barack Obama and also it’s condolences that his beloved grandmother who passed in the islands a few days ago wasn’t able to celebrate with him.
Regardless of your political affiliation, we should all look ahead to the future and hope to make this country a better place. That attitude is the cornerstone of the true meaning of aloha.
Jack Thompson…last one standing
Filed Under Current Events, Kilauea Volcano | Leave a Comment

And then there was one. Madame Pele’s fiery lava fingers reached out and took the structure of one of the two last residents of Royal Gardens subdivision. Dean Schneider was able to get out in time and was notified his house was gone which only took Pele 90 minutes to reclaim. This leaves reluctant island celeb Jack Thompson as the last man standing in the subdivision. The lava is currently 1 mile west of Jack’s place. Stay tuned to see how this bout with nature turns out.
