Hot dogs, getcher hot dogs here!

If you’re visiting the Garden Island of Kauai and find yourself in the Poipu area, you should take the detour to Poipu Shopping Center for a Puka Dog.  What’s a Puka Dog?  Well, puka means hole in Hawaiian and their fresh solid buns are toasted on a…er…very phallic looking metal contraption to create the puka for the dog.  They use a very tasty polish sausage or you can get a veggie dog.  Well, instead of me trying to explain it all, take a gander at their online menu:

Now I’m not big on the exotic before I’ve tried the basic.  I figure if a place can’t do simple well, I don’t want their fancy schmancy stuff to cover up inadequacy.  So I got the polish sausage and I just wanted mustard on it.  Boring, yes but I gave you my theory.  They kept asking what kind of lemon garlic sauce I wanted and I really didn’t think that sounded good but they wouldn’t stop hounding me on it so I finally gave in and got the jalapeno and yellow mustard.  Then they couldn’t accept that I didn’t want their enticing Lilikoi (passion fruit) mustard.   We told them we’d take a little on the side but give me the yellow mustard please.  (I was beginning to get real irritated fighting for what I wanted.)  So I got that and a lemonade. (aka-sugar water with barely a hint of lemon to it)   Now I’ll admit that the combo of the lemon garlic jalapeno with yellow mustard, somehow seemed to work however, there was entirely too much of both inside this puka.  It was oozing out the top and overpowered the really tasty dog until I scooped half of it out.   The hubby got a polish sausage with mango relish and ketchup.  He said he liked his and he’s not even the culinary daredevil of the two of us.

We went back a few days later and I just wanted straight up mustard and ketchup (NO sauces of any kind) and he got the pineapple relish on his.  Again, it was a fight to get what we wanted.  They put so much mustard and ketchup in mine that it soaked the bottom of the bun out and it broke.  Thank God I was sitting down and it was wrapped.  He liked his pineapple relish too.

Now despite all of this, would I recommend Puka Dogs to others.  Yes.  The dog itself is very high quality and the bun is really good.  My only tip would be to be prepared to tell them you do NOT want half the puka filled up with condiments unless you’d like to risk wearing them.  I do encourage you to try all of the exotic flavors they have to offer.  I was just in the mood to be a traditionalist there.

If you want to see the Puka Dogs up close, tune into The Travel Channel’s “Hot Dog Heavens” tonight at 8 and 11pm.  (Check local listings)  Open Monday-Sunday 11 AM to 6 PM

Hawaii: A Message in the Waves special

Filed Under Hawaii TV | Leave a Comment

While flipping channels Sunday night, I came across a BBC special on Animal Planet called Hawaii: Message in the Waves.  I stop when I see anything Hawaii related but this especially touched my heart.  I’m a big animal lover and especially love the animals we share the ocean with.  One thing I can’t stand seeing is litter on Hawaii’s beautiful beaches because it’s not long before the animals in the ocean mistake it for food.  Do you know those handy plastic bags?  They look like jellyfish to an unsuspecting honu (turtle).  Those plastic tabs around your 6 pack of your beverage of choice easily get caught around the mouthes of dolphins so they can’t eat or it gets around the necks of seabirds.  The plastics that you throw away and don’t recycle can end up in the ocean and into the stomachs of the animals of Hawaii.  I don’t know if Animal Planet will be reairing this special but here’s the trailer for you to view:

You can visit their website at MessageintheWaves.com

You can also go to the Kokua Hawaii Foundation for ways you can help.

Some of the easy things you can do is cut the plastic rings on your 6-packs then they can’t restrict an animals ability to eat.  Don’t throw litter or plastic bags out the window.  Recycle them!  It’s not as hard as you think and many places will give you money for your recyclables.  If you need a little pop culture to help you remember the easy tips it takes to change this world for the better, just click below!  I think you Schoolhouse Rock fans may recognize some of it.

Any mainlanders missing Hawaii TV programs?

I stumbled across the site for Hawaii IPTV, LLC and was excited at what I saw!  If you live off island but still miss the local newscasts or Sam Choy’s Kitchen or Board Stories, Hawaii IPTV can help!  All you need is cable or DSL and their set top box plugs straight into that and before you know it, you’re streaming Hawaii TV programs!  There are 2 levels of service to choose from:

Hawaii IPTV Level 1
Monthly Plan: $15/month - 1 year service agreement
Set top box: $125 One Time Charge
Setup fee: $25 One Time Charge
Hawaii IPTV Level 2

Full Year Of Service: $100
Set top box: $125 One Time Charge

There is a 30 day guarantee as well.

Their programming has a variety of shows but I’d love to see more.  The biggest drawback I can see so far is the look of the box/remote.  It’s yellow.  I mean YELLOW!  I don’t know many decors that would go with but if the Big Bird yellow color doesn’t scare you then this may be a great way to whip up some poke with Sam or check the surf report with Guy Hagi!

Wala’au with Dickie Chang at the Garden Island News

Filed Under Hawaii TV | Leave a Comment

Anyone whose ever lived on or visited Kauai probably knows who Dickie Chang is.  Dickie is a high energy, fast talking, aloha filled man with a passion for Kauai and the state of Hawaii.  His cable access show Wala’au can be seen every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 7am, 12pm, 4pm, 7pm and midnight on those days on Oceanic Time Warner channel 6.  But what if you’re not on Kauai?  No problem cousin because now you can see Dickie and his stories of aloha on the Kauai Garden Island Newspaper online!  I was excited to see this because when you’re far from the Garden Island, you miss your fix of Dickie’s smiling face.

Be sure to check out the July 3rd episode part 2 where Dickie replays an interview he did with the legendary Israel Kamakawiwo’ole about a year before he passed.  Bruddah Iz and his sense of humor will make you smile and his music still touches your heart 10 years after he left us.

So be sure to check back every week to see the newest episode of “Wala’aaaaaaaaaaaau.”  (You’ll have to watch Dickie sign off at the very last episode of the shows to get that one!)
