Remembering our sweet baby girl…
Filed Under Spread the Aloha | Leave a Comment
This is one of my favorite pictures of our baby girl. We’d left abruptly after dinner only to come home and see she decided to “help” us with the box. She shrunk down low because she was sure she was in trouble but we couldn’t help but burst into laughter. Who could be mad at that sight??
It was a year ago today we had to make the ultimate sacrifice due to her failing health and send our baby to heaven. It was the hardest decision we’ve ever had to make but we know there was no quality of life anymore and she was in pain that could no longer be managed by medication. We miss her so much every day. If you’ve ever owned a Toy Fox Terrier or a terrier of any kind, you know of their boundless energy and they rarely show pain. They stay active until the end. We got 14 1/2 years of love, comedy, kisses and hugs, playtime, barking, snuggling, a nurse when we were sick, a comedian on down days and a little baby that appreciated any time you spent with her whether you were playing or she was laying beside you.
We miss her in every way imaginable and her loss is still so fresh a year later. She was our baby. So for those of you lucky enough to still have your furbabies, give them an extra hug tonight or play with their favorite toys because there are some of us who would do anything for one more day with our little sweeties.
Aloha Aisha, you are loved, thought of and missed every second of every day.

Behind the scenes at Food Network Challenge: Part 1
Filed Under Food Finds, Luau, Spread the Aloha | 6 Comments
I noticed the Food Network will be replaying the Food Network Challenge: Luau Beach BBQ a few times in June. We actually attended this event to cheer on our new friend, Sam Choy. I thought my readers might be interested to see what goes on behind the scenes at one of these. When my husband contacted Sam Choy to cook for our 10 year anniversary in 2006, we had to do a little last minute finagling because he was going to be in the Food Network Luau BBQ Challenge. We originally were going to do it our last night on the Big Island on May 18th but had to switch it to the 16th for him to do the challenge. When we talked with him after dinner, he said he didn’t have everything together but wasn’t too worried because they were dishes he was very familiar with. I feel like we got a bit of a preview when he made us some kalua pork among other things. Oh they were WONDERFUL! He said we were welcome to come down to the challenge which was going to be at the Sheraton Keauhou…a few miles from our rental home. So a few hours into it we showed up. He looked up and saw us and smiled and waved at us. The pic above is when there’s about 90 minutes left in the challenge. The camera crews were around Sam alot so we took whatever pictures we could of him when they cleared.

From the KITV website:
The Ladies of Kaahumanu are asking for donations of plumeria flowers for the annual lei draping of the King Kamehameha statue in front of the Hawaii Supreme Court building.
There has been a shortage this year of flowers so the society is appealing to the public for help. They are accepting any color of plumeria flowers. The annual lei draping is a tradition that was started more than 50 years ago.
Volunteers will be at the Kamehameha statue Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to accept flower donations. The lei draping ceremony is later that evening.

I met Sam Choy in 2006 when my husband surprised me with him cooking us dinner at our rental home for our 10 year anniversary. (That’s what he’s doing in this pic, making a wonderful dinner for us!) We loved Sam for the same reason everyone in Hawaii seems to…he’s real. He’s as sweet and honest as he is on TV. We became fast friends bonding over the extra pounds we carried in the middle. Seeing him was a shock because it was obvious he’d lost a good amount of weight. I believe at the time we met him he’d lost about 80 lbs. He gave us the backstory on how he came to lose that much weight. When we got together with him last year to hang out, he’d lost even more…125 lbs total. I told him he had chicken legs now! hee hee
I came across a great article in Hana Hou Magazine that features him and his trainer, whom he just raves about. If you’re curious about how Sam has dropped the pounds, click here to read the article.
